Vienna Days: A Home That Shaped Me: My Vienna College Journey

By Rhoda Byoga (Class of 2008)

My time at Vienna College was nothing short of transformative; an experience brimming with moments that were both simple and profound. It was a space where academic pursuit existed alongside personal growth, where friendships were nurtured, and where our collective spirit found expression in ways that continue to shape who I am today.

At Vienna College, we were given the freedom to explore and redefine ourselves. It wasn’t just about the grades or the lessons on the curriculum; it was about discovering what made us unique and what we were capable of. Whether through sports, the music and drama department, chapel leadership, or student governance, there was always a new avenue to explore our talents and interests. Every corner of the campus offered its own distinct lesson: the teamwork forged on the playing field, the creativity sparked in the rehearsal rooms, and the sense of responsibility cultivated in student leadership roles.

Visitation day was a cherished occasion, a welcome respite from the rigors of school life. I looked forward to it with eager anticipation more than just the opportunity to catch up with family, it meant indulging in the home-cooked meals my mother lovingly prepared.

Back at the dorm, we would gather our leftover treasures around a 'dining table' , a makeshift gathering spot on the top bunk of a double-decker bed and share the spoils. No distinctions existed among us in those moments; it was simply a celebration of generosity, camaraderie, and the joy of being together. What made these days even more special was the fact that, unlike many other schools, Vienna College afforded us the privilege of visitation every month, an experience I will forever cherish.

Perhaps the greatest gift Vienna College gave me was friendship. The bonds I formed during those years remain my anchor. We have celebrated milestones together; weddings, baby showers, anniversaries and stood shoulder to shoulder during times of loss. These friendships, forged in our adolescence, have withstood the test of time and distance.

Equally transformative were the relationships I built with the faculty. One teacher, in particular, stands out: Madam Mirian. Years after leaving the school, I had the opportunity to work closely with her, and that full-circle moment was a poignant reminder of how the impact of an educator extends far beyond the classroom. Her influence, along with that of many others, was instrumental in shaping my journey both within and beyond the walls of Vienna College.

As a teenager, I found myself often straddling the worlds of the chapel and the dance floor, each offering its own form of expression. During moments of doubt and change, I could retreat to the chapel for solace, or find release in dance, and I was never made to feel as though I had to choose between the two. Vienna College provided me with a safe space to question, to evolve, and to embrace both sides of my identity without fear of judgment.

The chapel, in particular, became a place of profound connection. It was where I learned the true meaning of community through prayer meetings, choir rehearsals, and Sunday services. It was a sanctuary that fostered faith, nurtured relationships, and offered a sense of belonging that transcended the ordinary. The friendships I built there are among the most meaningful in my life; many of those people remain my closest allies, and I still consider them my brothers and sisters.

Looking back, Vienna College was more than just a school; it was a home. It was a place where I grew in ways I never could have anticipated. The lessons I learned, the friendships I formed, and the experiences I lived will always be a part of who I am. As I move forward in life, I carry the values and the memories of my time there with me, grateful for everything Vienna College gave me. It shaped me into who I am today and for that, I will always be thankful.
