Where the Spirit Never Dies: Vienna Rugby and the Brotherhood That Endures
By Brian Lugwire, Vienna Rugby Alumnus
The Heart of Vienna’s Sporting Spirit
Vienna College has long been known for its fierce competitive spirit from the rugby pitches to the basketball courts and the track fields. For decades, its teams have embodied discipline, unity, and pride values that echo far beyond graduation.
Yet, this series isn’t just about remembering; it’s about reconnecting. We want to hear from every alumnus who’s ever laced up a boot, taken a shot, or raced for their house. Because Vienna’s story isn’t written by one generation it’s written by all of us.
The Brotherhood That Time Couldn’t Break
It’s been more than two decades since I last laced up my boots for the Vienna Rugby team, yet even now, I can close my eyes and feel that same electric charge that came whenever we stepped onto the field. Time has blurred some details, but the feeling that deep, unshakable unity has never left me.
We were more than teammates; we were brothers. We moved as one, breathed as one, and carried each other through every tackle, every sprint, and every loss. Winning together brought unmatched joy, but losing together taking it on the chin and rising again forged our character. We loved being underestimated, walking onto the pitch as underdogs and walking off as giant slayers. Few moments rivaled the satisfaction of shocking teams like SMACK, Namilyongo, and St. Lawrence.
The Day We Owned the World
If I had to pick one defining moment, it would be winning the 7s Main Cup at St. Lawrence. The whistle blew, the sun high over the field, and for a heartbeat there was silence that shared breath before the final pass. Then came the roar. The crowd erupted as the ball crossed the line. In that instant, we weren’t just a team, we were a heartbeat that believed.
Defeating Namilyongo in that final wasn’t just a victory; it was vindication. When we lifted that trophy, the world felt small, and we felt unstoppable.
The memories still play like a highlight reel: Ntimba Michael and Carvalho’s clever fakes, Biggy Brian’s crunching tackles, Martin Karungonjo, Allan Bayo, and Jo Entonu’s calm leadership, and Baba Raymond’s lightning pace that left defenders stranded. Oh, could that boy play rugby!
When Vienna Breathed With Us
But it wasn’t just us on the field. Vienna itself seemed to breathe with us. When visiting schools came, the energy on campus was electric. The chants, the cheers, the pride we felt like celebrities in our own home. I still remember Ojok Hannington and Benjamin Katuramu discovering their hidden rugby spark and helping us clinch trophies that seemed out of reach.
In every game, we carried more than a ball. We carried the pride of Vienna, the discipline of our coaches, and the belief that together, we were unstoppable. Rugby wasn’t just a sport; it was a reflection of who we were and what Vienna stood for unity, resilience, and heart. It bound us together and pulled the whole school into its orbit.
Those matches taught us lessons we still carry today: teamwork, humility, grit, and the joy of standing shoulder to shoulder with people who believe in you.
The Spirit Lives On
And while those memories belong to another era, the spirit they built still lives on in reunions, in laughter, and in every story retold.
This is just one of many chapters in the Vienna Alumni Sports Series stories that celebrate our shared legacy and rekindle the pride of being part of something greater than ourselves.
From the fierce brotherhood of rugby to the golden years of Vienna Basketball, and the unforgettable House Spirit on Sports Days that united the entire school, these stories remind us of who we were and how those moments continue to shape who we are.
Because Vienna sport was never just about the scoreboard. It was and still is about the spirit that made us family.
