Brains Behind the Boots; Meet Joel Mukambwe the Titans' Tactician.
On Saturdays, Grit on Sundays, and a Rivalry That Runs Deep
If there’s one thing Joel Mukambwe brings to the Vienna Titans, it’s wisdom seasoned with fire. A former Vienna College baller, Mukambwe now calls the shots from the sideline and while the boots might come off for coaching sessions, the competitive edge? Still razor sharp.
"I played the game during my younger days and still do," he says. "Coaching the Titans is an exciting opportunity for me to share with the young lads what I’ve learnt and experienced over the years."
This isn’t just a return to roots. It’s a full-circle leadership arc.
From Uniform to Sideline: A Titan’s Journey
Mukambwe isn’t here for nostalgia, he's here to win, teach, and mold. And if you’re looking for a coach who’s all about rigid systems and strict routines, he’s not your guy.
"Flexibility in applying tactics is my strength," he says. "But tactics can only be passed on to a team that’s well motivated and mentored."
In other words: he’ll draw the Xs and Os, but only after making sure the locker room is buzzing with belief.
To the Young Ones: “Stay Humble”
As a Titan alumnus, Mukambwe knows what it’s like to be on the sidelines at Vienna College, watching and wondering when it’ll be your turn. His advice to those players?
"Stay humble and always maintain a good attitude toward learning. There’s always something to learn."
It’s that mindset of lifelong learning, zero ego that he’s pushing through the alumni squad, even when egos tend to come pre-installed.
🔥 Kabojja vs. Vienna: "Engraved in Our DNA"
Rivalries aren’t made overnight. And according to Mukambwe, the Vienna-Kabojja rivalry was alive long before the alumni league was even a thing.
"Kabojja has always been a rival. This rival is engraved in our DNA," he says. "It’s a healthy and fun rivalry, though. It inspires us as Vienna to do better."
This season? That rivalry got personal.
"Vienna vs Kabojja brought out the most passion. The best team Vienna lost."
You can hear the sting in his voice. But also the pride.
Selection, Strategy & a Relaxed Storm
Managing alumni players, many of whom still think they’re 19 and at peak form, requires some finesse. Mukambwe’s selection policy is clear-cut:
"It’s merit-based. We consider commitment, hard work, technical ability, and discipline."
And when the boys are gearing up before kickoff, the vibe isn’t chaos. It’s calm confidence.
"Focused and relaxed, with confidence oozing around the space."
That’s the signature energy of a Mukambwe-led squad controlled fire, not wild flames.
⚡ QUICKFIRE WITH COACH MUKAMBWE
1.Hardest Titan to manage during a game?
"None at the moment." (He’s clearly doing something right.)
Favorite post-match activity?
"Hanging with the boys." (Classic.)
If not coaching on a Saturday?
"Golf course." (Of course.)
One word that defines the Vienna Titans?
"Resilient."
Joel Mukambwe isn’t the loudest guy on the touchline. He’s not pacing back and forth or throwing clipboards. But make no mistake his presence is felt.
With a tactical brain, calm demeanor, and that unshakable Vienna spirit running through his veins, Mukambwe is one of the key architects behind the Titans’ current rise.
Golf might be his escape. But football? That’s the heartbeat.
Vienna Titans. Resilient by nature. Tactical by design.
