Leading With Purpose, Rooted in Legacy

Prof.Rachel Mindra Katoroogo (Class of 2002)

In the early 2000s, a young girl walked through the gates of Vienna College with wide eyes and an open mind. Fresh from Mount St. Mary’s Namagunga, one of Uganda’s most traditional Catholic girls’ schools, Rachel Mindra was struck by a world that seemed, at once, unfamiliar and full of promise.

“I remember being surprised we could wear trousers as part of our uniform,” she said with a laugh. “But what stood out more was the discipline and structure at Vienna. It was different but it worked.”

Today, Dr. Rachel Mindra Katoroogo stands as a force in Uganda’s academic and financial sectors. As Associate Professor of Finance and Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), her journey from a curious teenager at Vienna College to an accomplished leader is nothing short of remarkable.

The roots of that journey were planted at Vienna, where she served as Head Girl. The role ignited her belief in leadership, responsibility and the courage to serve a foundation that would support her ascent through academia and public service.

After graduating from Vienna, Dr. Mindra pursued a degree in Business Administration (Finance) at MUBS, later returning as a teaching assistant after a short stint in banking. Her love for finance took her to the UK, where she earned a master’s degree from Loughborough University with distinction. A marriage proposal brought her back to Uganda where she married in 2009 and began balancing the rigors of academic life with motherhood.

Today, she’s a mother of two boys, aged 12 and 15, and holds a Ph.D. in Finance from Wits Business School in South Africa again graduating with distinction. Her influence extends beyond academia: Dr. Mindra is a director on the Uganda Securities Exchange Board and chairs its Business Conduct Committee. She contributes to national financial inclusion strategies through her work with the Bank of Uganda, and consults for major organizations, including MTN Uganda and ZTE.

Despite her titles, Dr. Mindra remains grounded. She credits her parents especially her father, for steering her toward teaching, a career she initially resisted. “He said it would give me time to raise a family and grow professionally,” she said. “He was right.”

A dedicated Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, she is set to become President of the Rotary Club of Kampala East in 2025. She also leads several internal committees at MUBS, where her leadership continues to shape the next generation.

Reflecting on her formative years, Dr. Mindra says Namagunga gave her strong values, but it was Vienna College that allowed her to dream in color. “Vienna exposed me to diversity and possibility. It gave me courage, confidence and purpose.”

Her message to the next generation is clear: lead with integrity, embrace authenticity, and never stop learning. As she looks ahead to the upcoming alumni dinner, she sees more than a reunion she sees an opportunity to celebrate the bonds that shaped her and to inspire those who walk the same halls today.

“I want to be remembered not just for my career, but for the legacy I leave in leadership, in service, and in the Vienna community that helped mold me.”
